Modernism can broadly be defined as the period where new, radical steps were taken to revitalize the way society viewed life, art, and sciences. The poet Ezra Pound characterized the movement best in 1934 when he exclaimed, Make it new! This was Modernisms approach towards what it saw as the now obsolete culture of the past. Artists, writers, and thinkers searched for new forms of expression and broke from the traditional views of the world. The movement rose out of the rebellious mood the world fostered from the late 19th century to the early 20th century but, to really understand this rebellion, we must acknowledge the drastic social, economic, and political change that the world underwent during this time period. Modernism was born while the world was undergoing a great industrial change that resulted in new discoveries, technologies, and inventions. Some of these include electricity, the incandescent light bulb, the automobile, the combustion engine, the airplane, X-rays, and the radio. All these revolutionary discoveries created a sense of pride for mankind. They were also able to accelerate the pace by which people experienced life. Man could now accomplish much more through the use of the machine, and this invigorated and empowered us. New philosophical theories were influential to the Modernism Movement as well. The refutation of the Newtonian principle that reality was an absolute, unquestionable entity divorced from those observing it was a key belief for Modernists. This was a revolutionary theory, which truly makes it a Modernist idea. In 1905, Albert Einstein further supported this refutation when he coined his iconic theory of relativity. It held that time and motion are relative to the observer since for all frames of reference the speed of light is constant and all natural laws are the same. In other words, there is no such thing as universal time and thus experience runs very differently from man to man. Subjectivity and individuality became a focal point for all thinkers alike. Nihilism was yet another flourishing ideology of this time. Nihilism is defined as the rejection of all religious and moral principles as the only means of obtaining social progress. In other words, the modernists repudiated the m oral codes of the society in which they were living in. The reason that they did so was not necessarily because they did not believe in God, although there was a great majority of them who were atheists, or that they experienced great doubt about the meaninglessness of life. Rather, their rejection of conventional morality was based on its arbitrariness, its conformity and its exertion of control over human feelings. In other words, the rules of conduct were a restrictive and limiting force over the human spirit. The modernists believed that for an individual to feel whole and a contributor to the revitalization of the social process, he or she needed to be free of all the encumbering baggage of hundreds of years of hypocrisy (mdc.edu). Modern economics and the role of people in the workforce were transformed by the increasing technology previously described. But, despite us only describing the positive effects these inventions had, there were still negatives that were associated with this new machinery. People used to be involved in all facets of production but, this new age turned men into simple tools that only accomplish small, insignificant tasks. This led to a lack of satisfaction from jobs and work. These dissatisfied workers formed into coalitions which politically threatened the upper class for the first time. Perhaps most importantly however, was the progress made in the field of psychology. One of the most influential theories which is still discussed today is Freudian psychology. Sigmund Freud was the first to gaze inwardly and to discover a world within where dynamic, often warring forces shape the individuals psyche and personality. To explain this internal world within each of us, he developed a complex theory of the unconscious that illustrated the importance of unconscious motivation in behavior and the proposition that psychological events can go on outside of conscious awareness. And so, according to Freud, fantasies, dreams, and slips of the tongue are outward manifestations of unconscious motives. Furthermore, in explaining the development of personality, Freud expanded mans definition of sexuality to include oral, anal, and other bodily sensations. Thus, his legacy to the modern world was to expose a darker side of man that had been hidden from view by the hypocrisy of 19th- c entury society (mdc.edu). All of these factors, along with the fact that the world just witnessed the ghastly horrors of the supposed War to End All Wars, contributed to the emergence of Modernism. The consequences of technological advancements were that Modernists felt that they didnt want to commit themselves to any one system or style. They wanted to be free in their art and went as far as to shame academic art for trying to restrict the freedom art grants. Many new styles and experimentation was the ultimate result. The wrestling with all of the new assumptions about reality and culture generated a new sense of freedom in the realm of the arts. The arts were now beginning to break all of the rules since they were trying to keep pace with all of the theoretical and technological advances that were changing the whole structure of life. In doing so, artists broke rank with everything that had been taught as being sacred and invented and experimented with new artistic languages that could more appropriately e xpress the meaning of all of the new changes that were occurring. The result was a new art that appeared strange and radical to whoever experienced it because the artistic standard had always been mimesis, the literal imitation or representation of the appearance of nature, people, and society. In other words, art was supposed to be judged on the standard of how well it realistically reflected what something looked or sounded like. The new psychological breakthroughs impacts on Modernism are not to be discounted as well. Freud had asked us to look inwardly into a personal world that had previously been repressed, and Einstein taught us that relativity was everything. And, thus, new artistic forms had to be found that expressed this new subjectivity. Artists countered with works that were so personal that they distorted the natural appearance of things and with reason. Each individual work begged to be judged as a self-sufficient unit which obeyed its own internal laws and its own in ternal logic, thereby attaining its own individual character. No more conventional cookie-cutter forms to be superimposed on human expression. Katherine Mansfield is considered one of the quintessential Modernist writers who is most famous for her short story, The Garden Party. This story was written in 1921 and contains many elements that one would expect to see in a Modernist piece. Firstly, this story was written after WWI and, as most stories that are written post WWI, it is much darker in nature than other stories had previously been. Mansfield also doesnt really apply a solid structure in her story. For Modernist Writers, plots were no longer linear and did not always contain a beginning, middle, or end. The modernists wanted to capture the moment of a story and often began their narratives mid-action with little to no introduction to setting or background information on characters. Stories climaxes were reached through distracted, often fragmented storytelling with unresolved or ambiguous endings (gradesaver.com). The Garden Party is no exception to this as Mansfield began her story in media res, focused the core of her plot on single epiphany moment, and left us with an extremely ambiguous ending. Lastly, it is hard to overlook the classic Modernist use of perspective The Garden Party boasts. Just as the psychology and philosophy of the time began to focus on subjective individuals, so did the writing. Authors began to experiment with perspectives such as stream of consciousness, multiple viewpoints, or internal monologues. Mansfield uses internal monologue here which clearly expresses the thoughts of Laura as her complicated story unfolds. All of this shows how The Garden Party was a Modernist piece based off when and how it was written. But, the overall plot is also influenced by the Modernism period. Just as Freud and Einstein stressed each persons individuality, the main character, Laura, also shares this sentiment. She originally feels a great deal of compassion for the Scott family when no one around her batted an eye. In addition, the epiphany that occurs is also in line with classic Modernism style. The seemingly small event of viewing the dead body has a plethora of effects on Laura. She now rethinks all of her previous misconceptions about class relationships, comes to a new realization of the nature of life as a whole, and even truly becomes an adult in just a few moments. She was once a naive girl who fluttered around in her perfect garden world before she witnessed this death and gained all of these realizations. Here the symbolism of the garden takes on a new meaning: like the paradise that was the Garden of Eden, the sheltered world of the Sheridan household is blown open when Laura comes into the possession of forbidden knowledge: knowledge of death, of the realities of life (interestingliterature.com). T.E. Hulmes impact on Modernist Poetry is remarkable with him even being the author of the manifesto for modern poetry. He is considered the first modern poet as he wrote the first modern poem in 1908, on the back of a hotel bill (huffpost.com). After the formal, flowery, and romantic era of Victorian literature, Modernist works leaned towards experimentation as they wished to comment candidly and competently on the degenerating state of the world. This context helps to explain the pervasive characteristics of Modern poetry: free verse and otherwise untraditional forms, disillusionment and a preoccupation with perception, and how to cope with a fragmented reality. The Embankment by Hulme is not only his most famous poem, but also a classic Modernist Poem. It discusses a fallen man who sleeps on the pavement of Londons Embankment, a commonly known area where homeless people sleep. Hes down on his luck and reminisces about the old dance parties hes been at and women hes been with. Now though, while he has nothing, he realizes that warmth is what really matters and what poems should be written about. The poem then ends with a heartfelt entreaty to the heavens, with the poems speaker beseeching God to make a blanket of the starry sky so that the speakers wish for warmth might be granted (interestingliterature.com). Hulmes free verse poem here uses a striking image thats very uncommon and fits into the Modernism classification. The sky is described as an old star-eaten blanket. In previous years, the sky was seen as something romantic to go along with distinguished and refined individuals. A homeless man in those poems would look up to the star-studded sky and gain the hope to one day pick themselves up. This poem, on the other hand, uses a homeless man who got into his position through his sexual temptations and economic irresponsibility and then wishes the sky was a torn, moth-eaten blanket because that would be more practical for him. This embodies the cynicism o f Modernism along and the vices of men which Freud exposed. Modernism didnt hide from portraying these characters and their misgivings and sins as other periods had. They embraced them and even placed them in the forefront of their movement. George Seurats A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is certainly his most famous and influential painting. Its a staple of Modernism and even began some artistic movements itself. Seurat contrasted miniature dots or small brushstrokes of colors that when unified optically in the human eye were perceived as a single shade or hue. He believed that this form of painting, called Divisionism at the time (a term he preferred) but now known as Pointillism, would make the colors more brilliant and powerful than standard brushstrokes (impressionniste.net). This method was revolutionary and helped him start Neo-impressionism, where artists explored ways of expressing emotions in their work, by using simplified colors and definitive forms rather than simply painting what they saw. While the fact that the methods by which the painting was made makes it Modern in it of itself, the meaning of the painting coincides with the beliefs of Modernism as well. Some of the characters are d oing curious things. The lady on the right side has a monkey on a leash. A lady on the left near the river bank is fishing. The area was known at the time as being a place to procure prostitutes among the bourgeoisie, a likely allusion of the otherwise odd fishing rod. In the paintings center stands a little girl dressed in white (who is not in a shadow), who stares directly at the viewer of the painting. This may be interpreted as someone who is silently questioning the audience: What will become of these people and their class? Seurat paints their prospects bleakly, cloaked as they are in shadow and suspicion of sin (iub.edu). Modernism is certainly one of the most important and experimental literary periods that the world has experienced to date. With all that was happening in the world at the time it is not hard to see why all this change occurred. I think it is important in all ages to challenge and progress from the old and start to make something new.

Winds are another factor that make mountain biomes different from the areas around them. By nature of their topography, mountains stand in the path of winds. Winds can bring with them precipitation and erratic weather changes. That means that the climate on the windward side of a mountain (facing the wind,) will likely be different from that of the leeward side (sheltered from the wind.) The windward side of a mountain will be cooler and have more precipitation, while the leeward side will be drier and warmer.   Of course, this too will vary depending upon the location of the mountain. The Ahaggar Mountains in Algerias Sahara Desert will not have much precipitation no matter which side of the mountain you are looking at. Mountains and microclimates   Another interesting characteristic of mountain biomes is the microclimates produced by the topography. Steep slopes and sunny cliffs may be home to one set of plants and animals while just a few feet away, a shallow but shaded area is home to a completely different array of flora and fauna. These microclimates may vary depending upon the steepness of the slope, the access to the sun, and the amount of precipitation that falls in a localized area. Mountain Plants and Animals The plants and animals found in mountainous areas will vary depending upon the location of the biome. But heres a general overview: Temperate zone mountains Mountains in the temperate zone, such as the Rocky Mountains in Colorado generally have four distinct seasons. They usually have conifer trees on their lower slopes that fade into alpine vegetation (such as lupins and daisies,) above the tree line. Fauna include deer, bears, wolves,  mountain lions, squirrels, rabbits, and a wide variety of birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.  Ã‚   Tropical mountains Tropical areas are known for their species diversity and this holds true for the mountains found there. Trees grow tall and at elevations higher than in other climate zones. In addition to evergreen trees, tropical mountains may be populated by grasses, heathers, and shrubs. Thousands of animals make their homes in tropical mountain areas. From the gorillas of Central Africa to the jaguars of South America, tropical mountains host huge numbers of animals. Desert mountains The harsh climate of a desert landscape - lack of rain, high winds, and little to no soil, makes it difficult for any plant to take root. But some, such as cacti and certain ferns, are able to carve out a home there. And animals such as big horned sheep, bobcats, and coyotes are well adapted to live in these harsh conditions. Threats to Mountain Biomes As is happening in most ecosystems, the plants and animals found in mountain regions are changing thanks to the warmer temperatures and changing precipitation brought on by climate change. In Ralieghs poem The Lie, he also deals with the subject of mortality. The first line of this poem is Go, soul, the bodys guest. It is clear that he sees the soul as a separate being from ones physical body. In this scenario the body is simply the host of the soul, and it will leave upon the expiration of life. In this poem Ralegh is sending his soul on a mission to tell all of the people of the world that they are living a complete contradiction. He lists all kinds of things that he claims are not what they seem. There are lines like tell flesh it is but dust, and tell nature of decay. Basically he is commissioning his soul to go and tell the world what he feels that it needs to hear, and the soul is the perfect messenger because it can not be harmed. This is clearly his intent, and this is evident from the last four lines of the poem which read: Although to give the lie deserves no less that stabbing- Stab at thee he that will, No stab the soul can kill. This quote clearly shows the power and virtue of a soul. There are contradictions in this poem. On one hand it has a very bleak outlook on life, and suggests that humans are inherently immoral, but at the same time it touches on the sorrow and loss in the event of death. All the while the soul which is now free and untouchable is sent to be the bearer of bad tidings. This poem can be interpreted in more than one way, but there can be no doubt that Ralegh believed that death meant the soul could move on to better things which is not a pessimistic attitude. His description includes fine cloths, gold and diamonds in the streets, happiness with good friends, and an overall feel of goodness and peace. After this extended description of heaven he states: Seeing my flesh must die so soone, And want a head to dine next noone, Just as the stroke when my vaines start and spred Set my soul on an everlasting head. From this line it can be taken to mean that he feels that as long as he is permitted to go to this place which he has described that he has absoultly no problem with death what so ever. Since death is unavoidable, this is a fine attitude to take about the subject. He evidently has come to terms with his own mortality, and is prepared to take the next step. Raleghs poetry varies quite a bit when it comes to the subject of mortality. Is some cases he shows spite and bitterness towards the ever encroaching aspect of time. He seems to feel robbed and cheated by his rapidly shortening amount of time in the world. On the other hand, much of his work takes a great deal of solace in the fact that the eternal soul moves on to a better place upon the conclusion of life. Ralegh clearly did not feel that he had all of the answers when it comes to the transition from life to death. It was a subject that occupied a great deal of his poetry, and most likely his thoughts. In effort to keep her and Romeos love alive, Juliet takes a drug that makes her seem as though she were dead. (O Conner 69)In the hour of her fake funeral, Romeos friend Balthasar misinterprets Juliets death. He flees to Mantua, which is where Romeo is exiled for slaying Tybalt. Romeo, not knowing of Juliet and the priests actions, believes that story he was told to be true. He then returns to Verona a sad and forlorned man. (o conner 127)Upon his return, Romeo purchases poison so that he may join his true love at the gates of heaven. He arrives at the church and approaches the supposedly dead Juliet. He allows himself one last hug and kiss before they are to meet again. As Romeo drinks the poison, Juliet awakens to find her love dying before her. When Romeo dies, Juliet feels the only way they can be together is in death. Therefore, Juliet falls on Romeos sword so they can reunite again. During the Renaissance period, women were very active in religion. They were only allowed to speak their minds in church so that is where the y spent most of their time (sachs 17). The belief of the Renaissance time was that men ruled over their wives, as parents did children, as kings did coutries, and as God rules over all. Shakespeare shows the dark and light side of religion in many of his plays. Is it weeks or months? Is it dozens of hours or hundreds? The answer to these questions depends on a variety of factors, including your target score and how comfortable you already are with the test material. On the other hand, if you're still pretty far away from the scores you want, you may have to work harder than you think. In this guide, I'll show you how to figure out how much you need to improve, how many hours you need to spend to get there, and how you should build a study schedule before your next real ACT. Step 1: Find Your ACT Target Score Your ACT target score is the score you're aiming for that'll be high enough to get you into your top schools.You can download this free guide to calculate your target ACT score. You can alsocheck out this articlefor a quick look at how to find an appropriate target score for your goals. The easiest way to determine a target score is to Google your top choice school and â€Å"ACT scores.†You should be able to find a 25th percentile score and a 75th percentile score for the school. The range between the two represents the scores of the middle 50 percent of admitted students. Aim for the 75th percentile score (a higher score than 75 percent of the school’s admitted students) as your target to make sure you have the best chances of acceptance! Step 2: Take a Practice ACT to Determine Your Starting Point Here's a link to five free printable ACT practice tests, complete with answer keys so you can grade them yourself.Take one of these practice tests so you can see where you are relative to your target score. When I say to take a practice test, I don't mean answer questions for a section casually throughout the day while watching YouTube videos in the background. Set aside a weekend morning and go through each section with the same constraints you would have on the real test. Why should you subject yourself to such torment? Because it's the only way to get a good estimate of where you stand in relation to your target score. Time pressure is a huge factor on the ACT, and it can impact your score significantly. Furthermore, going through all the sections in a row forces you to account for any fatigue you might experience on the later sections of the test. If you already know your starting point scores from a previous test or practice test, great! As soon as you settle on your test date, you'll be ready to cook up a study plan. As you can see, the time you need to devote to studying if you're hoping for improvements of more than a few points is pretty significant.If you want to improve by more than 4 points or so, you'll have to do some in-depth content work to address gaps in your knowledge. The ACT tests a lot of different concepts, so it can take a while to cover them all. This is why an earlier start is better. Ideally you should start studying sophomore year to space out your hours and gradually gain familiarity with the structure of the test.Everyone has different study habits and restrictions on time, so you should further customize your plan while keeping these hour estimates as a baseline. Step 5: Create a Plan Based on Your Time Constraints and Studying Style How many weeks do you have before the test?How much time can you devote to studying in a typical week? There are many factors that will affect how you decide to study for the ACT. Here are some potential scenarios and corresponding study plans to get you started: Scenario 1: I Want to Improve by 1-2 Points, and I Have a Lot of Other Commitments Try doing some focused studying for an hour or two every week for however much time you have before the test.If you start at least a few months beforehand, you won’t be overwhelmed with yet another commitment, and you will gradually gain familiarity with questions while learning to avoid the silly mistakes that are costing you points. Two hours a week of studying for two months is a good general goal if you are closer to the test date. If you have four or more months before the test, you could try just an hour a week.Six months of studying for just an hour a week = 26 hours of study time! Scenario 2: I Want to Improve by 5 Points, and I Have the Summer to Study, but I’m Not Sure Where to Start Unstructured time is hard to manage, but it also means you can choose to study whenever you are most comfortable and least distracted.If you schedule out an afternoon each week when you will focus on studying, a few months may be enough to improve your scores.The chart above recommends around 80 hours of studying for a 5 point improvement. If you have three months to study, that comes out to about five hours a week. Scenario 3: I Want to Improve by 8 Points or More. Am I Crazy? No, you are (probably) perfectly sane!You may want to start studying earlier to catch up on the stuff you’re missing, but it’s doable if you're willing to put in some serious time and effort. If you still have six months before the test, think about which day of the week you will be least stressed by other commitments and schoolwork, and set that afternoon/evening aside for studying.Block out five hours a week for six months in advance of the test, and you should start to see significant positive results. If you have the resources to hire a tutor, this is when you might consider doing so.Theadvice of someone who has experience with the test is usually helpful if you feel like you are lacking in fundamental knowledge. Step 6: Consider Factors That Increase or Decrease Study Time Requirements You might have special circumstances that mean you need to customize your study plan more drastically. Some people should study for more or less time based on past experience and time management skills. You May Need to Study for More Time If... You've already studied a lot, and you haven't seen much improvement. This might mean you need to switch up your strategies in addition to studying more. Take an objective look at how you've been using your study time so you can make productive changes. You're easily distracted. If you're spending a large chunk of your study time framing the perfect snapchat of you making a sad face with your ACT materials, you have a distraction problem. Try blocking out more time, and put away electronic devices while studying. It takes a while for you to learn from your mistakes. If you need to practice answering questions a few times before you understand your mistakes fully, you should consider studying for longer periods of time. You Might Improve in Less Time If... You're new to the ACT. If you are someone who has barely looked at the test before and just started studying, you'll see larger score gains in a shorter time. You're a super focused studier. What might take another person two hours to process will take you one, so consider dialing back your study time. You don't want to overdo it and end up with test fatigue. You learn quickly from your mistakes. If you never make the same mistake twice, you also shouldn't go overkill on studying. You probably only have to get the wrong answer once before you can rely on yourself to answer similar questions correctly in the future. Background One of the things that slip away very quickly when faced with illness is the right to direct one’s own life. The first thing becomes the choices about the future and the way in which one will live within that future. As doctors, family members, and eventually hospital staff begin to make the decisions about how, what and when one will do things, an individual slips into the role of ‘the patient’, no longer able to function without instructions and care. The right to choose death over a continuation of indignity, pain, and eventual harsh tr eatment of the body has become an issue through which many different opinions have emerged. Euthanasia is illegal in all fifty states, with the exception of Oregon and Washington where it is legal for physicians to prescribe, but not administer, drugs that will lead to death in the case of terminal situations.1 The right to choose death over pain and the indignities of a prolonged illness that is terminal is denied, leaving people to languish in their final days. Dignity in death is not a new issue. In the 1970s one of the solutions that emerged was the development of hospice care. Hospice care has an emphasis and spiritual and comfort, the individual does within that type of care not wanting aggressive medical care (McKenna & Feingold, 2010). The choice within the hospice environment is death through natural and dignified means to the extent that it is possible. Hospice care is most often done in the home, people given the opportunity to pass in their own beds or at the least in a space that is comfortable and filled with memories. The average length of care for hospice is 26 days, with the end clearly near. This unfortunate late arrival, however, fails to allow for the full use of hospice that might have prolonged the peaceful experience of passing into death.2 Hospice care, however, is not always a good option and an intermediate form of providing some dignity with death is that of palliative care. Under palliative care, the patient is given high levels of pain killers although the loss of consciousness is not the intended result. This gives the patient the opportunity to interact with their families, creating a more healing environment even when the restoration of health is unlikely. Often, though, it will lead to an unconscious state, relieving pain and keeping the sedated through the end of their time. The high level of pain reducing medications are maintained until the patient dies, giving the end of their days relief from either pain and often from the conscious knowledge of their physical state. Its source is a virus carried by rodents, particularly the deer mouse, and transmitted by direct contact with their droppings. Symptoms appear within the one to six weeks of initial exposure, and initially include muscle aches, fever, and other flu-like symptoms. After a while, the victim may experience shortness of breath and coughing resulting from decreased circulation in the lungs and a lowered white blood cell count coupled with opportunistic infections. At this stage if they are not brought to a hospital soon they stand the risk of dying within the next twenty-four hours.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This disease, although not new, has experienced a large re-emergence in the southwestern United States and Mexico due to the arid climates in those areas. In a dry area, the disease’s incubation is somewhat longer, making the chances of contracting it somewhat higher. Symbolism of the Island

The Island Major Joe Ridge View High School English 1 Mrs. Walker December 17, 2012 There are many different symbols in the book Lord of the Flies. Some of the symbols represent peace and some represent war. Some of the characters themselves represent different symbols. The item of symbolism that stood out the most was the island itself. The island itself is an excellent item of symbolism because it uses the boys themselves to convey what it stands for thus almost making itself seem alive. The island represents peace, atavism, the struggle to hang on to civilization, life, and the struggle to hang on to humanity.The island itself stands for peace. It shows this through Simon. The special place in the jungle where Simon went shows the peaceful part of the island. There is not much of it but it is there hidden by all of the confusion other factors at work. â€Å"He came to a last place where more sunshine fell. Since they had not so far to go for light the creepers had woven a great m at that hung at the side of an open space in the jungle; for here a patch of rock came close to the surface and would not allow more than little plants and ferns to grow. The whole space was walled with dark aromatic bushes, and was a bowl of heat and light.A great Tree, fallen across one corner, leaned against the trees that still stood and rapid climber flaunted red and yellow sprays right to the top† (Golding 56). Simon found that place peaceful and beautiful. He goes there in the middle of the night just to escape the atavistic character of the island itself which is portrayed through the forest and Jack. The island also shows atavism through the forest and through Jack. Throughout the story the boys continued referring back to creepers â€Å"I can’t hardly move with all these creeper things† (Golding 7).Creepers are like vines that climb up tree trunks and grow across open patches of ground. They cover up the trees and ground and make it hard for the tree or the ground to get sunlight or water. The vines take the water from the trees so that they can survive in the conditions of the island. Jack and his hunters do similarly the same thing with the pigs. The boys engulf the pig with their presence and beat it to death making it nearly impossible for them to escape the rancorous attacks and also making it nearly impossible for the pigs to breed and fill the island with wildlife and swine.The island also portrays life. For this it uses the open space that Simon found and the fire. When Simon found his special part of the island, he noticed that the creepers did not grow there allowing the fruit trees and the flowers to grow there abundantly. The fire also symbolizes the life of not only the island but the life of the boys’ morale and hope of going home again. â€Å"The fire was dead. They saw the straightaway; saw what they had really known down on the beach when the smoke of home had beckoned. The fire was out, smokeless and dead ; the watchers were gone.A pile of unused fuel lay ready,† (Golding 67-68). The boys saw a ship passing by in the distance when they found out that the fire was dead. At that moment Ralph called an assembly. Jack and his hunters came from the forest with a pig. Ralph told Jack about the fire and the ship but the only thing the Jack was concentrated on was how he and his hunters managed to capture the pig. The Island also represents the struggle to hang on to civilization. The Island shows this through the scar that the plane left when it crashed.The entire island is in order with creepers and trees making an attempt to grow everywhere. The beach is sandy and the lagoon is not too far from the beach everything on the island was neat and in order. The plane crashed it left a scar that left a path of burned creepers fallen trees and overturned dirt and debris. The rocks on the island also had a role in breaking the rope of civilization. When Piggy’s glasses broke they fell on a rock after Jack smacked them off of Piggy’s face. â€Å"Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks.Piggy cried out in terror: ‘My specs! ’†¦ ‘One side’s broken† (Golding 71). At that moment in the book the normal world’s idea of civilization went out of the window and Jack’s idea took over. Ralph and piggy both wanted to keep the island as civilized as possible. Piggy gave ralph the idea to blow the conch and try to call all the boys to one central location. While resting on the mountain he realized the conditions of himself and the other boys on the island: With the memory of his sometime clean self as a standard, Ralph looked them over.They were dirty, not with the spectacular dirt of boys who have fallen into mud or been brought down hard on a rainy day. Not one of them was an obvious subject for a shower, and yet—hair much too long , tangled here and there, knotted round a dead leaf or a twig; faces cleaned fairly well by the process of eating and sweating but marked in the less accessible angles with a kind of shadow; clothes, worn away, stiff like his own with sweat, put on, not for decorum or comfort but out of custom; the skin of the body, scurfy with brine—He discovered with a little fall of heart that these were to conditions he took as normal now and that he did not mind, (Golding 110). This realization from Ralph shows that he misses the rest of the world and that being shut off from the rest of the world gave him and even stronger need to try to restore civilization on the island. The island also symbolizes the struggle to hang on to the humanity of the island. Before the boys came to island the pigs had no real enemy that was known. The boys were the same way.When the boys were luckily landed on the island the pig’s predator became Jack and his hunters. It was easy for Jack to find his first pig but not as easy for him to kill it. The second time he carried out his task. As the story continues Jack has to go through different procedures and tricks in order to find a pig. He painted his face, he crawled around on the ground following a pig slide and pig droppings. He ends up killing pigs almost every day for the group. The pigs adapt to Jack’s ways and try to avoid him.When Jack killed the mother sow, the amount of humanity left on the island was in question. â€Å"Rodger found a lodgment for his point and began to push till he was leaning with his whole weight. The spear moved forward inch by inch†¦ ‘Right up her ass! ’† (Golding 135). The island was the most important symbol in the book. Without the island and the natural features of it then one may not think that the island could stand for anything other than an uninhabited graveyard for an assortment of young boys.In order to really see the significance of the island one needs to look closely at the events that happen and where they happen in the book. The island talked to the reader through the characters of the story. Each character represented a different trait of the island. Jack was the fear of the island, Piggy was the gentle side, Ralph was the firm part of the island, and Simon was the peace on the island.
